ABOUT MODA SURF

WE’RE
MODA SURF.

Lombok offers large, consistent left- and right-hand barrels that are recognised as some of the best waves on the island. Every surf lesson at Moda Surf Lombok takes place in one of our carefully selected surf spots, chosen daily depending on conditions, tides, and your surf level.
Here’s where we surf most of the time:

Moda Surf is based at Selong Beach, just 30 minutes south of the airport in Lombok. Selong Belanak is an amazing beginner spot to start developing your surf skills. About ten minutes from Selong are several great beginner and intermediate surf spots, where we’ll help you to develop your surf skills. And for our more experienced surfers, we’ve got you covered too.

MEET JACK.

A surfer riding a wave near a coastal mountain range.

Jack, the founder of Moda Surf, was born and raised in the old Mawi village in Lombok. As a kid, he didn’t really surf, until one day, a boat full of tourists arrived, and Jack watched them surf for hours. That moment changed everything for him. From this day, he and his friends went surfing after school every day. As they didn’t have surfboards yet, they used banana leaves and pushed each other into the waves.

After high school, Jack sold snacks and coconuts on Mawi Beach, improved his English and practised his surfing. He started teaching in Selong Belanak, later joined the first surf school in Kuta, and eventually returned home to open his own small warung. Back then, he was doing it all: teaching lessons, running out of the water to cook for guests, and heading straight back into the surf.

For Jack, teaching isn’t just about catching waves. It’s about connection. His students quickly become friends, even family. His teaching style? A mix of straightforward and fun, “a bit special,” as he says himself. He might forget your name, but he’ll make sure to give you a nickname you won’t forget. For him, surfing in Lombok is all about community: friendly locals, shared waves, and respect in the lineup.

Experience the waves of Lombok with Jack and the Moda Surf crew. Catch a wave (or a nickname) and discover what makes surfing in Lombok truly special.

A more advanced option just a few minutes from Selong Beach. Lancing delivers longer, cleaner rides with more power and shape. A great step-up spot once you’re ready to leave the beginner bay behind but also great for longboarding.

A beautiful horseshoe-shaped bay offering multiple peaks and clear turquoise water. Depending on conditions, it can range from mellow inside waves, a dream for longboarders, to faster reef sections on the outside. Ideal for mixed-level groups.

Mawi

Mawi is a quite powerful wave in South Lombok. It’s a favourite among advanced surfers looking for a proper challenge. The takeoff is heavy and long, and when it’s on, Mawi delivers fast, technical barrels. A paradise for the local and experienced surfers but it demands respect and solid surf skills.

Serangan is a playful and consistent wave that’s perfect for progressing surfers. It offers clean, well-shaped rides with both lefts and rights, making it ideal for building confidence and working on technique before stepping up to heavier waves. A great spot to bridge the gap between intermediate and advanced surfing.
